Description
Felton Park is a house built in 1732 and altered in 1799, with further modifications made in 1951. The original structure was likely designed by Canston for Edward Horsley Widdrington and was remodeled in 1799 for Ralph Riddell, although the main part of the house was demolished in 1951. The building features squared stone with cut dressings, and the front block is covered with Lakeland slates, while the wing uses Scottish and Welsh slates. The layout includes a front block from 1799 that was formerly the east wing, with a rear L-plan wing from 1732.
The south front of the house is two storeys high and has seven bays, arranged symmetrically. It has a plinth and rusticated quoins, with four steps leading up to a central renewed door that has an 8-pane overlight. The windows are primarily 12-pane sashes, except for a blind window in the left end bay. A moulded eaves cornice runs along the top, and the hipped roof features two rebuilt stepped-and-corniced stacks. The right return has two bays with 12-pane sashes, which have been renewed on the ground floor.
The west elevation consists of six bays plus three bays. It also has rusticated quoins and sill bands. The left part features an old boarded door in a rusticated surround in the fourth bay, along with 12-pane sash windows, some of which have been renewed and are set in moulded surrounds. The roof is hipped to the left and has a stepped-and-corniced ridge stack. There is a three-step mounting block attached near the left end. The similar three-bay left return has two ground-floor windows that are blind. The projecting right part displays a similar doorway that has been re-set from the demolished section, along with various sashes, some renewed and in re-set surrounds. A rainwater head inscribed "RR 1799" is located on the inner return.
At the rear of the wing, there is a central projection with a boarded door and a 4-pane overlight in a rusticated surround, along with a 12-pane sash window above and a hipped roof. The projecting part to the right shows a blocked elliptical arch in a raised alternating-block surround on the inner return. At the back of the front block, there is a rainwater head marked "G III R" from the Old Cavalry Buildings in Canterbury.
Inside, the front block contains three segmental-arched fireplaces from the former kitchen located in the rear wall. The bedrooms above, which were formerly nurseries, feature fielded-panel doors and coved ceilings with enriched cornices. The rear wing includes an entrance passage flanked by round-arched stone doorways with imposts and keystones.
