Description
Shire Hall is a building with origins dating back to the 15th century, located on the south side of Common Place in Little Walsingham. It is two storeys high, with a floor removed in the late 18th century to create a chamber for court proceedings. The structure is built from flint, featuring later brick parapets and window and door dressings. It has a steep pantile roof with gabled ends.
On the first floor, there are three large sash windows with glazing bars, while the ground floor has three flush-panel doors set in segmental-headed openings. To the right, the main entrance is adorned with a large pediment supported by shaped brackets, leading to double doors with flush panels and a moulded doorcase. There are brick chimney stacks at each end of the building. At the rear, remnants of 15th-century stone window frames can be seen, featuring ogee or four-centred arch lights.
Inside, the court chamber retains its late 18th to early 19th-century fittings, including the chairman's seat and box benches. The Royal Arms of George III, dated 1778, can be found alongside panelling and a public gallery at the west end. Beneath the gallery is a lock-up for prisoners, which contains benches and a urinal. Quarter Sessions were held at this location until 1861.
