Description

56A High Street is a shop that originally included domestic accommodation in a lost rear wing and upper floors. It dates back to the 16th century and has undergone many alterations, with repairs made in 1969. The building is timber-framed, with brickwork that is rendered and colourwashed, topped by a plain tiled roof. It has three storeys and an attic, with a gable end facing the street featuring a 20th-century shopfront on the ground floor. The first floor has a six-light 19th-century transomed display window arranged in two groups of three four-centred lights. The jetty above was reduced in depth in 1969 when the entire front wall was rebuilt above this point. There are two casement windows on the second floor and an attic casement above. The rear of the building is pebbledashed and supported by a permanent steel external frame.

Inside, there is one boxed bridging beam on the ground floor. A winder staircase that was formerly located in the north-west corner now only survives at the attic level. There are no notable features on the first floor, while the second floor has one chamfered bridging beam. The studwork on the facade is from 1969, and the roof, also from 1969, replicates a clasped purlin type. Some fragments of the original timber frame are still detectable.
