Description
The gatehouse, located 20 meters north of Denver Hall, dates back to 1570. It is constructed of brick and features a plain tiled gable roof. The building is two storeys high and has a square plan with diagonal buttresses, except for the south-west corner, which has an engaged triangular buttress. Access for pedestrians is from the north through a 4-centred depressed chamfered arch that is set beneath a square hood with labels. Above the arch, there is an incised coat of arms framed in ashlar and surrounded by a square brick border decorated with a zig-zag pattern. On either side of the arch, there is one annulated terracotta column. The first floor has a two-light mullion window with hollow jambs, also under a square hood with labels. A terracotta date plaque in the gable head indicates the year 1570. The south front is similar to the north but features a square pedestrian opening and three terracotta diamond studs in the gable head. On the west side, a stone staircase provides access to the first floor. The roof has been renewed.
