Description

The Church of St Mary is a parish church with a late 13th-century west tower, while the nave and chancel were constructed in the 14th century and later refenestrated in the 15th century. The north aisle and arcade were added in 1870 during a restoration of the church and its roofs. The building is made of carstone with ashlar dressings and has plain tiled roofs.

The tower is three stages high, featuring diagonal buttresses at the west side up to the first stage and set off at the second stage. It has lancet windows in the first two stages, with two-light Y traceried belfry windows and a battlemented parapet. A clock face was added to the western side in 1870. The nave has a gabled south porch with diagonal buttresses and Perpendicular style two-light side windows. There is one 14th-century Y traceried window on the west side and two transomed 15th-century three-light windows to the east of the porch, along with 19th-century windows.

The east side features diagonal buttresses and a restored three-light east window with ogeed cusped lights supporting three encircled quatrefoils from around 1330. There are trefoiled niches on either side of the window, and below it is a wall monument from 1715 with consoles supporting a pediment above an inscription plaque. The north chancel has three two-light windows under flat heads, and the north aisle has similar fenestration from 1870.

Inside, there is a four-bay north arcade with octagonal piers and moulded polygonal capitals that support double chamfered arches. The roof is boarded and scissor-braced with restored cusps, retaining a 15th-century wall plate decorated with shields and fleur-de-lys.
