Description
The Denver and District War Memorial is located at the junction of Sluice Road and Whin Common Road in the center of Denver village, prominently set on an open green space. It is near the Grade II-listed Hardwick House and southwest of the Grade II*-listed Church of St Mary.
The memorial features a Latin cross-head made of Portland stone, which sits atop a slender hexagonal shaft. This shaft is mounted on a hexagonal plinth that bears inscriptions, and below it is a four-stepped hexagonal base. The main dedication, honoring those who fell in the First World War, is carved in relief on the north face of the plinth. The names of the fallen are inscribed on the other faces of the plinth, listed beneath the place names where they lived, using incised lettering painted black. The six names of Second World War casualties were added later, with five inscribed on the uppermost step of the base just below the main dedication, and one listed beneath the names for Fordham.
The principal inscription reads: "TO THE HONOURED MEMORY OF THOSE WHO FELL IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919 ALSO 1939 – 1945."
The memorial is surrounded by six stone posts with a chain hung between them.
