Description
Bishop's Court Farm House has origins dating back to the 16th century and was enlarged in the 17th century and around 1857 when the main front range was constructed. The front range features a wide central entrance hall with one main room on each side. The building has brick walls with stone dressings and a burnt header pattern, a tiled roof, and brick stacks. It stands two storeys high with attics, and the central bay projects under a gable. A large four-centred arched opening leads to a recessed porch, which has carved coats of arms in the arch spandrils. The inner door, with sidelights, is set under a segmental arch. On the ground floor, there are two 2-light stone mullioned windows with double-hung sashes, and the first floor has two similar windows along with a small Gothic window with a hoodmould in the central bay. Inside this wing, the rooms feature good marble fireplaces and plaster cornices. The staircase has a cut string design with spandril brackets and twisted balusters.
The rear block, which dates from the 16th century and is now used as service rooms, has stone walls and a tiled roof with stone eaves courses, along with brick stacks. It also has two storeys and attics, with stone mullioned windows that are 19th-century replacements on both floors and a hipped dormer in the attic. The lower section to the west of this block, dating from the 17th century, has brick and stone walls and a tiled roof with parapets to the gables and a brick stack, featuring modern timber doors and windows. Internally, the rear sections contain two large open fireplaces, one of which has a bread oven, both of which are partially blocked. The ceilings in two rooms have deeply chamfered beams.
