Description

Nos. 23 and 24 The Street are a pair of cottages built in the 18th century. They are constructed from whitewashed brick and covered with black glazed pantiles. The cottages are two storeys high and feature four windows. On the ground floor, there are four arched-headed wooden framed casement windows with two lights and glazing bars, while the first floor has four straight-headed wooden framed casement windows, also with two lights and glazing bars. The buildings have a dentil eaves cornice and a hipped roof with a central stack. The doors are boarded and located on the returns. These cottages appear in the block plan in Isaac Ware's "Plans of Houghton" from 1735, published in 1750.
