Description
Nos. 4 and 5 The Street are a pair of cottages dating from the 18th century. They are constructed of whitewashed brick and covered with black glazed pantiles. The buildings are two storeys high and feature four windows. On the ground floor, there are four arched-headed wooden framed two-light casements with glazing bars, while the first floor has four straight-headed wooden framed two-light casements, also with glazing bars. The cottages have a dentil eaves cornice and a hipped roof with a central stack. The entrance to No. 4 is a boarded door, while No. 5 has a 20th-century glazed door on the returns. The cottages are depicted in a block plan in Isaac Ware's "Plans of Houghton" from 1735, published in 1750.
