Description
Nos. 27 and 28 The Street are a pair of cottages built in the 18th century. They are constructed from whitewashed brick and topped with black glazed pantiles. The cottages are two storeys high and feature a four-window centre with single-storey wings attached on either side. The ground floor has two arched-headed windows and four straight-headed two-light cast iron casements with glazing bars on the first floor. There are also two modern glazed doors that have been inserted on the ground floor in place of windows facing the street. The building has a dentil eaves cornice and a hipped roof with a central stack. The north wing includes a two-light cast iron casement and a stack, while the south wing features an inserted modern glazed door. The layout of the cottages appears in Isaac Ware's Plans for Houghton from the 1735 edition.
