Description
No 20, 21, and 22 The Street are a row of four almshouses dating from the 18th century. They are built of whitewashed brick and topped with black glazed pantiles. The buildings are single storey and were originally single bay cottages, but they are now divided into two occupations. On the west side, there are two centre-hung casements with glazing bars, while on the east side, there are two inserted 20th-century plate glass windows. The row features three boarded doors, and one flush door opening has been filled in. The original layout included a front parlour-kitchen and a rear bedroom, both with corner fireplaces. At the rear, there are centre-hung casements. The almshouses appear in block plan in Isaac Ware's Plans for Houghton from 1735, with a 1750 edition.
