Description
The monument to William Green is a headstone located 25 metres from the Church of St Mary in the churchyard of Old Hunstanton. It dates from 1784 and is made of limestone. The headstone features a segmental arched top and is adorned with a cherub surrounded by flower sprays. The inscription reads, "Here be the mangled remains of poor William Green an Honest Officer of Government who/in the faithful discharge of his duty/was inhumanely murdered/by a gang of smugglers in this parish." This monument is noted for its social historical interest.
