Description
The Greening monument is a hexagonal pedestal tomb located approximately 21 meters northeast of the lych gate in the churchyard of the Church of St Mary. This late 18th-century tomb is made of limestone and features a moulded capping with a gadrooned edge, a frieze adorned with rosettes and triglyphs, although two of its faces have been replaced in the 20th century. The monument has raised shouldered panels decorated with drapes and various carvings, including a skull, a dove, a pick and shovel, and crossed torches. It stands on a high moulded hexagonal base that rests on a square sub-base, which was formerly surrounded by a railing. The tomb commemorates Henry Greening, who passed away in 1806, although the inscription is only partially legible. The square base also includes an inset bronze plate for Ann Greening, dated 1769, which is partly obscured by the main monument. The structure is situated immediately north of the path in the churchyard.
