Description
The Shaws is a house located on Chequers Road in Grimston, dating from around 1800, although it has an older core. The building is rendered and has a pantile roof. It features five bays and two storeys, with internal stacks at each end. The facade includes a platband and wide pilaster strips at the corners. The central bay projects forward and is topped with a pediment, which contains a full-height semi-circular recessed panel. The windows are recessed sashes with glazing bars, while bays two and four have blank openings on the first floor. The doorway in bay two has a classical surround with an "A" within the pediment, a vermiculated entablature, and a six-panelled door with panelled reveals. The left side of the house is rendered. At the rear, the ground floor is constructed of galletted carstone, while the first floor is made of Sandringham sandstone. The rear also features a dentil cornice, grey unglazed pantiles, and quoins on the right side made of 18th-century brick. There are various window styles and additions, including a one-and-a-half storey wing in Sandringham sandstone attached to bay one and a 19th-century two-storey wing in carstone added to bay three, which has a lean-to on the right.
