Description

The Grimston War Memorial is a stone structure approximately 4.5 meters tall, situated in the south-west corner of the churchyard of the Church of St Botolph, which is a Grade I listed building. It is located near the junctions of Gayton Road (B1153) and Watery Lane, opposite the Grade II-listed School and Church Hill Cottages. The memorial features a blind wheel-head cross adorned with finely worked concentric grooves and foliate relief carvings on the cross head, set on a tapering octagonal shaft. The shaft ends in a tiered, moulded foot that rests on an octagonal plinth with a simple foot, all supported by a three-stepped octagonal base.

The plinth displays inscriptions on each of its eight faces, crafted in incised but filled lettering. The main dedicatory inscription on the front face reads: "IN HONOURED MEMORY OF ALL WHO WENT FORTH FROM THIS PARISH AND GAVE THEIR LIVES IN THE GREAT WAR 1914 – 1919." The names of those commemorated from the First World War are listed on six faces, with an incised rectangle where Albert Sayer's details have been removed. The rear face features a later dedication for the Second World War, which reads: "ALSO THE WAR 1939 - 1945 THEIR NAME LIVETH FOR EVERMORE" followed by two names.
