Description
Wood Hall Hotel is a house that has been converted into a hotel. It dates from the late 18th century and has undergone many alterations, with some parts rebuilt in the 20th century. A rear wing is constructed over a 14th-century round flint and brick tower that is part of the town walls. The rest of the building is made of brick and features machine-tile roofs.
The exterior has a two-storey central block with side wings that project forward. The north wing, made of mid-19th century brick, has a parapet that was rebuilt in the mid-20th century and includes a late 20th-century single-storey extension that projects further. The windows are sash style. The south wing, built in the late 18th century, also has one 8/12 sash window on each floor, framed in 20th-century surrounds, and a hipped roof. There is a French door on the north side under an 8/12 sash window.
The central block has two storeys and two bays. It features a central 20th-century door set behind a Doric doorcase with fluted pilasters and a hood. There are tripartite sash windows on either side of the door, with glazing bars arranged in a 6/6 and 2/2 pattern on the north side and an 8/8 and 2/2 pattern on the south. The first floor also has two similar tripartite sash windows. The parapet has been rebuilt. The rear wing rises two storeys above the town wall and has two canted bay windows fitted with 20th-century 0/0 sashes.
Inside, the round tower features four arrow slits under triangular lintels and a fifth arrow slit at a higher level, along with a doorway in the west wall. Most of the interior details, including the staircase, are of 20th-century character or origin.
