Description

The Church of St Spyridon, formerly known as the Church of St Peter, is a parish church located on Dene Side in Great Yarmouth. It was built between 1831 and 1833 by architect JJ Scoles and has been a Greek Orthodox church since 1964. The church is constructed of gault brick and features a west tower, nave, aisles, and a continuous chancel in the Perpendicular style.

The exterior includes a three-stage tower with an arched west door, a three-light west window, and cusped square windows in the ringing chamber. The tower is supported by stepped angle buttresses and has a clock face on the second stage. Twin two-light belfry windows and a crenellated parapet complete the tower. The aisles wrap around the west end of the chancel, with their west bays serving as entrance doors. There are seven two-light Perpendicular aisle windows on both the north and south sides, separated by stepped buttresses. The clerestory features eight rounded lancets with flat buttresses between them. The chancel has one lancet on each of its north and south walls, along with a five-light east window and diagonal east buttresses.

Inside, the church has a seven-bay arcade supported by square piers with grooves on each side, set diagonally and without capitals. The double wave-moulded arches lead to a flat timber roof in the nave, where moulded joists extend into moulded wall-posts. A plain gallery is located at the west end, supported by circular cast-iron columns. The interior also includes a timber reredos and various furnishings from after 1964. The font, dating from 1907, features five marble columns that support a circular marble bowl.
