Description
The Tower Fish Curing Works, built in 1880, is a fish curing facility located in Great Yarmouth. It features red brick construction with some stone elements on the south and east ranges, and has pantiled and slate roofs. The site is triangular, with three ranges of buildings surrounding a central yard.
At the west end of the north range is the manager's house and office, which is two storeys high. The north front has three bays, with a central door under a segmental arch flanked by two 2/2 horned sash windows, also with segmental arches. There are string courses at the first floor, which has three additional 2/2 horned sash windows. The roof is hipped and includes a central chimney stack. The west return has two bays, with two 2/2 horned sash windows on each floor. A terracotta plaque at the first-floor level reads: "J.R.N. Tower Curing Works 1880," and decorative terracotta rosettes and egg-and-dart plaques can be found on the building.
The long north range features a higher gabled roof, with paired and tripled segmental windows on the ground floor, complete with internal shutters. Above these windows are single swivel vents, and paired shuttered vents are located under the eaves. Ventilators are present on the roof ridge. The two-storeyed ranges on the east and south sides have painted ground floors and rendered upper floors, with gabled roofs at various heights. There are windows and loading doors on both the first and ground floors, with loading doorways opening into the central yard.
Inside the north range, there are racks and loves arranged in three and five bays, accessible from both the ground and first floors. The brine tanks are still intact.
