Description

The parish church of St Mary the Virgin and St Botolph is mainly a 14th-century building, constructed of flint with stone dressings and covered by lead, slate, and tile roofs. It includes a west tower, a two-story south porch, a nave, a south transept, and a chancel.

The two-stage west tower has stepped angle buttresses. It features a three-light perpendicular west window, a single light sound hole, and two-light belfry openings with cusped 'Y' tracery, along with a parapet with flushwork quatrefoils. The south porch has had its floor removed, with a 15th-century doorway featuring attached columns with capitals. Above the doorway is a three-bay perpendicular window with a transom and two central vaulted niches. East and west two-light windows have straight heads.

The nave has two north and two south three-light windows with Decorated period "petal pattern" tracery, alongside an additional two-light window on the north nave wall, separated by stepped buttresses. The south flushwork parapet is inscribed with the date 1894. The south window of the transept has Reticulated tracery and paired lancets to the west. A 19th-century three-light window is positioned to the east. Diagonal buttresses are also present.

The chancel has three 19th-century windows to the north, two 19th-century windows, and a 19th-century priests door to the south. Angle buttresses are at the east end, alongside a 19th-century Geometric style east window. A brick buttress is on the north side of the nave, and a cusped arched niche marks the site of a former transept.

The church holds 15th-century moulded oak north and south doors, and 15th-century oak doors to the parvise and tower. The hammerbeam roof is restored, featuring angels at the ends of the beams. A blocked arch reveals the location of a former north transept, and an arch to the south transept has a 19th-century single-framed roof. A perpendicular arch leads to the chancel, which also has an arched tomb recess in the south wall. A piscina is dated approximately 1300, alongside a dropped sill sedilia. The east window reveal features attached shafts with undercut capitals of late 13th-century date.

The church contains a collection of English medieval glass, together with imported glass from the Cloisters of Steinfeld in the south nave window. Four fine 14th-century oak desks are also present, with fronts decorated with a blind arcade of ogee cusped arches, featuring ½ shafts with base and capitals. Between the arches are quatrefoils alternating with mouchette wheels. A 14th-century hexagonal font base has a 19th-century top, clustered columns at the angles, with mutilated figures between, including a crucifixion.
