Description

Colenso Cottage is a house built around 1700, with an extension added in 1837. It is constructed of red brick and covered with pantiles, featuring an 'L'-shaped plan that includes two storeys and an attic, along with a single storey at the rear. The original part of the building has three windows and a flint plinth, with clasping pilasters that have moulded brick capitals. There is a moulded brick plat band at the first floor level on the south and east sides, and at the attic floor level on the east gable. The central entrance is highlighted by a projecting brick door surround, which has a moulded brick cornice and a segmental pediment above it. Above the door is a faded dummy window with a segmental brick arch.

The first floor features 20th-century sash windows in reduced openings, set beneath flat brick soldier arches, while the ground floor has a plat band. The 19th-century extension to the east has two windows with 20th-century sash windows and gauged segmental brick arches. To the left of this extension is a door with a rendered brick surround. The eaves have been raised over the 18th-century section, creating brick dentil eaves that extend over the entire building. At the rear, there is a single-storey wing from the 18th century, also with brick dentil eaves. The building has end gable stacks and an off-centre axial stack that corresponds with the gable of the 18th-century house. The extension added in 1837 served as a Registry Office.
