Description
The boundary wall, gateway, and barn located to the west of Salhouse Hall date from the 19th century. The structure is made of red brick, featuring stone and gault brick dressings. The elaborate boundary wall surrounding the stable yard is coped and castellated, with a false gable on the east side that includes octagonal angle turrets topped with castellations. It has one and two-light cusped openings with chamfered gault brick surrounds, a frieze of terra-cotta panels, a stepped string course, rectangular drips over the openings, a roll-moulded parapet, and a gable finial.
The wall curves to the north and connects to a gateway dated 1847, which features a double-chamfered four-centred arch and a castellated parapet supported by an arched and cusped corbel table. There are two small flanking piers with gable finials and stone shields set above them. To the west of the gateway, the wall incorporates lean-to stones on the north side and the south gable of a four-stead barn, which is constructed of 19th-century red brick and has a sheet asbestos roof. The barn features a two-light window with 'Y'-tracery in the south gable, roll-moulded coping to the gable parapets, and double doors on the west side flanked by staged buttresses. Ventilation loops with cusped heads and chamfered gault brick reveals are also present. The north gable has iron letters reading "W Lean-to" on the east side. The boundary wall, gateway, and barn are included for their group value with Salhouse Hall.
