Description

Providence Cottage is a house that was formerly an estate cottage, primarily built in the 19th century but incorporating earlier reused materials and possibly having an earlier core. It is constructed of red brick with black-glazed and smut pantiles. The building has two storeys, with a 1½ storey range to the west. The main block features a symmetrical facade with two ground floor sash windows that have glazing bars and two three-light casements on the first floor. The windows are set in chamfered gault brick surrounds, and the window bays are slightly advanced. There is a central doorway topped by a lean-to canopy supported on timber brackets, and above the doorway is a gault brick panel with the initials RW. The gables are parapeted, with external stacks, the one on the west gable being larger. A single-storey lean-to is located at the east gable, and there are two small brick buttresses on the south wall.

The 1½ storey block to the west is elaborately decorated and partly timber-framed. It features a slightly advanced two-storey bay that is off-centre, with a plain tiled gabled roof and two three-light square-headed windows with arched and cusped heads. There are three terra-cotta panels at first floor level, which may be reused chimney shaft bricks. The upper window is flanked by large console brackets that support the roof structure. Above the window head is a timber panel inscribed with the motto "God's providence is mine inheritance." The wall to the right of the bay is partly timber framed with brick infill, and there is a small arched window with leaded glazing. To the left of the bay, there is an arched doorway in a chamfered brick surround. The west gable features crow-stepped detailing and an attic window with a gabled hood. A lean-to extension is present at the rear.
