Description
The Dog Lodges to Heydon Park, built in the mid-19th century, serve as the entrance arch incorporating a pair of lodge cottages. Constructed from red brick with stone and stucco dressings, the building features pantiled roofs that are concealed by a parapet. It stands two storeys tall with one-storey side wings, presenting a symmetrical composition of five bays. The central pointed entrance archway is flanked by polygonal shafts topped with twisted terracotta finials.
The windows on both the ground and first floors are designed with two lights and feature Perpendicular tracery, square heads, and dripmoulds. The outer bays are slightly advanced and include cusped single-light windows. A moulded brick string course runs below the castellated parapet, which has saddleback copings. Above the arch centre, there is a double-step with a recessed panel displaying arms and a terracotta finial.
Lower lean-tos are present on the east and west sides, and the chimney stacks are symmetrically placed with diagonally set shafts. The windows on the north side have simpler tracery, while the two-storey lean-tos feature segmental headed cross-casements. Doorways in the single-storey lean-tos are topped with semicircular rubbed brick arches. The soffit of the entrance arch is rendered, and there are two entrance doors beneath the archway with moulded four-centred arched surrounds; these doors are made with vertical battens. Additionally, a pair of iron gates is located to the south of the archway, featuring a curved top rail, spiked railings, and a bottom rail with intermediates to form a dog-guard.
