PARISH OF ELVASTON LONDON ROAD (North Side) London Road Lodge Entrance Gates

II

Entrance gates and lodges. Early C19 with C20 alterations. Red brick with stone dressings. Two square lodges to either end of a curtain wall with central entrance gates. This central gateway has octagonal stone piers with moulded cornices and C20 iron gates. Attached to either side there are lower brick walls with coved eaves stringcourses, which continue round the piers, and embattled stone parapets with ridgeback copings. To centre of each wall is a chamfered flat headed doorcase with a returned hood and iron gate. Between these and the gate piers there are single, quoined, battered buttresses rising to eaves height. To either end there are the advanced lodges, each with a central 2-light recessed and chamfered mullion window with hoodmould, and embattled stone parapets with a coved stringcourse below. The lodges are both now only facades and side walls.
