Description

Gloucester Lodge is an early 19th-century lodge and gateway, constructed from random rubble and dressed stone with slate roofs. It features an embattled mock military gateway that includes a lodge and semi-circular curtain walls, which enclose a forecourt and end in gate piers that match the overall style. The central gateway has a broad depressed arch, flanked by octagonal towers. On either side of these towers are window openings, with one bay on the left and two bays on the right, across two floors. The windows are two-light stone-mullioned with stopped labels and glazing bar casements.

To the left is an embattled three-storey tower with a single light opening on each floor, featuring leaded lights. Inside the central archway, there is plaster vaulting designed to imitate stone, with a three-bay arcade on each side, each arch having a pointed head and four heraldic shields positioned above. The central gateway is adorned with paired wooden latticework gates resembling a portcullis, and there are heraldic achievements above the arch along with a whimsical datestone marked "1485". The embattled curtain walls have two small circular towers on each side, enclosing a wide forecourt area, while machicolated towers at the roadside create "giant" gate piers. Additional sections of rubble wall extend 5 meters to the south and 33 meters to the north.
