Description
This is a grand entrance to Glynllifon, comprising a monumental arched gateway and a pair of arcaded lodges. The entrance, designed in the style of a 'Triumphal Arch', features a large vehicular arch flanked by two lower arched pedestrian gateways. Each gateway has a keystone, with impost bands carrying pilasters rising to a plain frieze and cornice. Below the impost bands are stuccoed wreaths and panelled sections. Above the smaller gateways are blind rectangular panels, and the cornice is topped by eagles at the corners and a lion in the center facing south. The iron gates are fitted with finials, lock bars with rosette bosses, and quatrefoil dog bars.
The two-storey lodges to either side are arcaded on the ground floor and have three-window elevations facing the drive. Originally rectangular, they have been extended to the north and south. They are covered by slate roofs, with tall, cemented chimney stacks to the rear (north and south), featuring deep cornices. The first floors have nine-pane sash windows with balustraded aprons from which pilasters rise. Taller pilasters are at the corners, rising from the impost level of the ground floor two-order arcade with panelled piers. These arcades create a loggia within which are round-arched, twelve-pane sash windows and doorways, providing access to the gate-keepers' accommodation. The northern lodge has a boarded door, while the southern one has a half-glazed door.
The inner gable ends are pedimented, with small roundels near the apex and giant order pilasters. The northern lodge has a ten-pane (5 over 5) sash window within a broad stuccoed surround, while the southern lodge has a larger modern window of three lights; both have sill bands. The ground floors feature sixteen-pane round-headed sashes with stuccoed surrounds and keystones, flanked by narrow rectangular lights. Both lodges have added roughcast wings at right angles, largely featuring modern glazing. The wing to the south is two-storey, while the corresponding wing to the north is single-storey with an attic. Both wings have tripartite windows. The property was not accessible at the time of inspection.
