Description

20 London Street is a mid-19th century house and shop. The building is made of brick laid in Flemish bond, and it has a pitched roof covered in black-glazed pantiles.

The front of the building faces east onto London Street. It is three bays wide and two storeys high, featuring a small skylight near the ridge and a shallow eaves cornice. There are brick-built chimneys at both ends of the roof ridge.

On the ground floor, there is a late-19th century shop front in the larger southern bay, flanked by consoles and a shallow frieze. The shop front consists of three parts: on the left is a canted bay window with a large plate glass pane in the center and slim clerestory lights above, along with an elaborate cast-iron grille at the base. The center of the shop front has a blocked doorway, and on the right is another doorway with a half-glazed door, panelled reveals, and a six-vaned metal fan-light. The two northern bays each feature a six-over-six unhorned sash window with concealed boxes, and the entire base of the ground floor has a painted flint rubble plinth.

On the first floor, there are six-over-six unhorned sash windows with concealed boxes in each of the three bays. At the rear, there is a wing made of flint with brick dressings.

The building was first listed in 1973, with its listing updated in 1996. Earlier listings mention a 19th-century staircase with bobbin-turned balusters, but no further details about the interior features are provided.
