Description

5 and 7 London Street are a pair of early 18th century houses that were altered around 1760 and again in the late 20th century.

The buildings are made of red brick laid in a variation of Flemish bond and feature pantile roofs. They face west onto London Street and are roughly rectangular in shape with extensions at the rear.

The houses are two stories tall with a dormer attic. The gabled roof has four flat-topped 20th-century dormers fitted with two-light casements. There are internal gable-end chimney stacks on both the north and south sides. The north gable displays the roofline of the early 18th-century house, with brick tumbling. The principal elevation is symmetrical, featuring quoins and a moulded eaves cornice, and is seven window bays wide. The windows are six-over-six pane sashes set under segmental gauged skewback arches, with the central windows on each floor being blind. Each house has a doorway in the penultimate bays to the right and left, with timber doorcases that have hoods on console brackets. 5 London Street has a double-leaf six-panelled door, while 7 London Street has a four-panelled 20th-century door. Both buildings were converted into two restaurants in the late 20th century.

Inside, 5 London Street features chamfered bridging beams, and the ground-floor front rooms have been opened into a single space. 7 London Street retains an early 19th-century brick fireplace.
