Description
Westgate and Fernside are a pair of houses built in the late 18th century. Fernside, on London Street, was later converted into flats in the 20th century. The buildings are constructed of red brick in a Flemish bond pattern, with a front roof of black-glazed pantiles and a rear roof of red pantiles.
The main part of the buildings faces west onto London Street and has a roughly rectangular shape, with two wings extending east-west. The three-storey building is five window bays wide and has a shallow-pitched roof with two red brick ridge stacks, positioned in line with each house’s entrance. The symmetrical front elevation features windows all under gauged skewback arches. The attic floor has two three-over-three pane sash windows and one two-over-two pane horned sash window. The first floor has three six-over-six pane unhorned sash windows, and the ground floor has three two-over-two pane horned sash windows. There are two entrances, located in the second and fourth window bays from the left. Above the doors are blind windows on each floor. The four-panelled doors are set within a doorcase featuring plain side pilasters with a Greek key fret at the top, supporting a plain entablature.
Inside Westgate, a stick-baluster staircase remains, along with an arched window at the rear of the staircase.
