Description

Shirley House is a house, later converted into a club, built around 1770 and significantly altered in the late 20th century. It is located on London Street, Swaffham. The house is constructed of red brick, with a slate roof to the front and a pantile roof to the rear.

The building is three storeys high, with five window bays, the central three bays projecting slightly and topped with a pediment. The central entrance has a six-panel door, featuring two glazed panels, set within a timber doorcase of engaged Doric columns, a block entablature, and an open pediment. A five-paned fanlight is above the door. The windows are predominantly two-over-two sash windows with horns, set beneath gauged skewback arches, with the exception of two ground-floor windows on the left-hand side, which are single sash windows. A modillion cornice runs along the eaves. An oculus is located in the original pediment. The pitched roof rises to a central flat section, formerly gabled, featuring internal gable end stacks. A brick facade was added to the front in the late 20th century, but the central pediment section remains. The rear elevation has two-over-two sash windows under gauged brick lintels.

The interior has been altered, with the ground-floor south rooms now forming a continuous space used as a bar area. A stick-baluster staircase features a ramped and wreathed handrail. There are six-panel doors and an 18th-century fireplace.
