Description

Thornton House is a mid-18th century house located on London Street in Swaffham. It was later divided into offices in the mid-20th century. The house is constructed of red brick laid in a Flemish bond pattern, with a pantiled roof.

The exterior presents a two-storey, five-window facade. The central entrance features a six-panelled door with a three-paned overlight, set within a timber doorcase which has consoles supporting an open pedimented hood. The windows are 6/6 sash windows with gauged skewback arches; secondary glazing has been added externally. A dentil eaves cornice runs along the top of the building. The gabled roof includes internal gable-end stacks, and some tumbling is visible in the gable heads. A two-storey outshut is located at the rear.

The interior has been adapted for office use, but retains a staircase with two turned balusters per tread, a ramped and moulded handrail.
