Description

This is an aisled barn located about 20 metres north of the main farm buildings at Model Farm. It dates from the 14th century but was substantially remodeled in the early 17th century. The barn features a timber frame built on a brick base, with a weatherboarded exterior and a plain tiled roof that is half-hipped at the left end. A central gabled midstrey faces the farm buildings, with opposing double doors beneath the gable.

Inside, the barn has jowled arcade posts, many of which have a jowled base, along with slightly curved braces connecting to the tie beams, braces to the arcade plates, and some aisle ties. The roof structure consists of queen strut roof trusses with scarfed clasped purlins. Nine of the aisle posts have skewed trenches for passing braces, and four of the tie beams include mortices to receive the ends of these braces.

Historically, the barn represents a significant remodeling of an earlier and possibly larger aisled barn. The 17th-century alterations included replacing the roof structure, raising the side walls and aisle ties, and adding the midstrey. Surviving elements from the earlier structure include nine arcade posts, four tie beams with supporting braces, and arcade plates featuring splayed and tabled scarf joints at the east end, along with re-set aisle ties. This barn is a complex, multi-phase farm building that clearly showcases the different carpentry techniques used during its construction phases.
