Description

Old Farm Cottages consists of three houses that were originally built as accommodation for workers at Langleybury Home Farm. The cottages feature an early 18th-century front and extension of a 17th-century house. The early core is timber-framed, while the front and extension are made of red brick. The building has a hipped tiled roof and is two stories high with an attic, presenting a five-window front. The entrances are located in the center and outer bays, each with sidelights, and there are 20th-century casements on the intermediate and first floors, all topped with segmental arched heads. The structure has a plinth, a plat band at the parapet, and pilaster strips at the ends. There are three dormers, with the center one being gabled and the flanking ones hipped. A cross axial stack is positioned between the two right bays, and there is a stack at the left end. The left return has two blind bays with segmental-headed openings and one inserted casement. The 17th-century house at the rear right is at right angles to the main block and has a lower ridge. The right return showcases exposed framing on the first floor, featuring a mid rail, posts, and studs, along with two-light casements and an external stack with an offset. Behind the stack, a catslide roof extends over a lean-to outshut, and there are three-light casements in the brick rear gable end, with exposed plates and purlins. A gabled wing extends from the 17th-century block to the rear of the 18th-century block, which has an entrance with a hood and a parapet similar to the front. The interior has not been inspected. The cottages are included for their group value.
