Description
The stables to Langleybury House, now converted into flats, were built in 1726 for Sir R. Raymond. The structure is made of red brick with stone dressings and features a hipped tiled roof. The building has a symmetrical facade with a central entrance that includes six panelled double doors and a semi-circular fanlight set in a key-blocked brick arch. This arch is supported by moulded stone impost blocks and a plinth.
Above the entrance, there is a round light in a square recess with a moulded sill, apron, and guttae. The building has banded rusticated quoins and a stone cornice topped with a raised panel in a stone-coped parapet. The outer bays are fitted with glazing bar sashes that are recessed and have segmental heads, stone sills, and a mix of 12-pane and 9-pane windows, with additional windows in the outer bays of the link sections. The end bays feature ground floor blocked arches with key blocks and impost blocks, along with first-floor sashes.
A continuous plat band runs along the parapet, and there are projecting piers at the ends. A 19th-century clock turret and bell cupola are located on the ridge at the center of the building. The clock is set into a brick base with recessed panels, supported by scrolled diagonal buttresses, and topped with a cornice leading to an octagonal Doric bell stage with a weathervane finial. The two-bay returns have pilaster strips, and the rear features a central entrance with a segmental head and outer double doors. The first floor has 9-pane sashes and tripartite flanking center bays, with close eaves and inserted stacks.
Inside, the right half of the stable block retains 19th-century stalls and mangers, complete with iron ball finials on the timber posts. The stables face Langleybury House across an entrance court.
