Description
Blenheim Cottage is a house with origins dating back to the late 16th century. It was extended and heated in the 17th century, then cased, partially rebuilt, and further extended in the mid 18th century. Additional alterations and extensions occurred in the 20th century. The structure features a timber frame with red brick casing and a rear extension, topped with tiled roofs.
The original two-bay core was extended to the right and rear during the 17th and 18th centuries. The house is two storeys high, with the entrance located in the 17th-century bay to the right. It has three-light casement windows, with two windows in the earlier range that have cambered heads on the ground floor. There is an eaves cornice, and a 17th-century stack is positioned behind the ridge at the original right end. A rendered lean-to is present on the roughcast right gable end, while a one-bay 20th-century addition with a tile-hung gable is on the left.
At the rear, there is a catslide roof over a 17th-century lean-to outshut connected to the rear of the 16th-century range. A two-storey wing from the 18th century is located at the rear of the 17th-century bay, featuring three-light casements and a tile-hung rear gable with a cambered head on the ground floor. The 17th-century bay has a separately pitched roof at the back. Inside, there are two diamond mullioned window frames in the original rear wall, one with a moulded mullion. Braces extend from jowled posts to cambered tie beams, with angled struts replacing earlier queen struts, and collars clasp purlins, along with windbraces. The building was formerly known as the Rose and Crown Public House.
