Description

99 Church Street is a house that was formerly a shop and public house serving canal traffic. It dates from the early 19th century but was altered in the later 19th century. The building is constructed of stock brick, with roughcast on the road side and whitewashed at the rear, and it has slate roofs.

Facing the Grand Union Canal and Batchworth Lock are two three-bay, two-storey ranges, each with central entrances. The entrance on the left features a round arched gauged brick surround, with a door set in a reveal that has a reeded lintel. The ground floor on the left has a tripartite sash window, while the right side has a glazing bar sash with a flat arched head, and both floors have glazing bar sashes. The three bays on the right include a central loft opening and smaller windows, with segmental heads on the ground floor. The building has projecting eaves and a shallow pitch to the roof, with a central ridge stack and a right return at an obtuse angle.

The rear of the building faces the River Chess, where there is a mix of sashes and casements. The road side features two bays with a one-bay addition to the left, which has a lower entrance and a hipped roof. There are sashes and a ground floor canted bay, along with end stacks. The right return to the canal has exposed brick and a basement. The interior has not been inspected.
