Description

21 and 25 Harefield Road are a pair of semi-detached houses that were originally a single agricultural building. Dating from the late 16th century, they were converted into a house in the late 17th or early 18th century and later divided into two cottages in the early 19th century. The houses have undergone some 20th-century alterations. They are timber-framed, with red brick and stucco on No. 25, and feature a steeply pitched tiled roof. Each house has two bays with a central entrance. No. 21 is two storeys tall, while No. 25 has one storey with an attic. There are later brick and timber gabled porches added to both. No. 21 has a panelled door and 12-pane horizontal sliding sash windows, while No. 25 has 20th-century 12-pane two-light casements. Both houses have gabled tile-hung dormers, a central stack behind the ridge, and external end stacks with offsets. There are lean-to and flat-roofed additions at the rear. Inside, No. 21 features chamfered bridging beams on the ground floor. This building is significant as it exemplifies the adaptation of a structure in a formerly rural area to meet changing agricultural and housing needs over time while retaining much of its original character.
