Description
No. 1 Batchworth Hill is a house that was originally two dwellings, dating from the 16th century or early 17th century, and was refronted in the late 18th century. The structure is timber-framed with a red brick front, rendered gable ends, and an exposed frame with brick nogging at the rear. It has a tiled roof and may have started as a late hall house, later being floored and rebuilt as a symmetrical pair of cottages.
The building is two storeys high and consists of four bays. On the ground floor, there is an entrance to the left featuring a dentil cornice bracketed hood, while a blocked entrance is located to the right. The inner section has three light 20th-century casements with segmental heads above all openings. A rendered plinth is present at the base. The first floor has blind openings flanking three light casements and features dentilled eaves. There is a large stack at the rear right. To the left, there is a one-storey, one-bay 19th-century addition with an end stack, and at the rear, there is a gabled extension.
Inside, the building has a stop-chamfered ground floor binding beam and king post trusses in the roof, supported by straight windbraces.
