Description
The obelisk, dated 1825, is located in a pond on the south bank of the Grand Union Canal in the garden of Number 17 Moor Lane. It serves as a water gauge and was commissioned by the Company of Grand Junction Canal. The structure is made of stone and features a moulded base and cornice, with shallow pediments positioned about one-third of the way up the obelisk, which stands approximately 2.5 meters tall. Two faces of the obelisk are inscribed, documenting an agreement between John Dickinson of Batchworth Mill, the landowner R. Williams of Moor Park, and the Grand Junction Canal, which established the water level at this location following a prolonged dispute.
