Description
This is an 18th-century canal warehouse, situated on the south side of Measham High Street. It has been converted into shops. The building is constructed of red brick, a type known as "Measham gobs," with dentilled brick eaves and a gable band. The roof is a mix of slate and 20th-century tiles. The front of the building is rendered, while the rear is brick.
The front elevation is of two storeys, though the rear rises to three. It features three recessed half-round arches, with six two-light casement windows above and modern shop fronts below. A 19th-century shop front frame with small 20th-century panes is on the left, a 20th-century window and door set within an arch recess in the centre, and a 20th-century shop front on the right. The building abuts the former canal route, which passed under the street at this point. The right end has a recessed giant arch with three original blank recessed windows, with cambered lintels on the ground and first floors, and a round-arched window on the second floor.
The rear of the building has a recessed central arch. The windows have been altered in the 20th century. A large arch and recess on the ground floor, originally providing direct access to the wharf, is located on the left. The warehouse and number 26 opposite were originally designed as mirror images and together create a significant architectural group.
