Description

A canal warehouse, dating from around 1800, now a shop. The building is constructed of red brick, known as "Measham gobs," with decorative brick dentil eaves and a gable band. The roof is tiled, likely from the 20th century. The front façade is two storeys high, while the rear is three. The painted front features three recessed half-round openings containing 20th-century windows above. There's a long central fascia and, below, a recessed central door set within a former giant arch, now altered, with 20th-century windows on either side. The left end of the warehouse abuts the line of a former canal which ran under the street at this point. Here, a recessed giant arch displays original blank recessed windows on the ground and first floors, with cambered lintels, and a round arched window on the second floor. The rear has a recessed central arch and three renewed 20th-century windows with cambered lintels, alongside a 20th-century flat-roofed brick extension. A large blocked arch on the ground floor right originally provided direct access to a wharf. A house to the right forms part of the building but is of less significance. The warehouse, together with numbers 39-43 on the opposite side of the street, were originally designed as mirror images and form a significant group.
