Description
The Lower Gate House on the Grand Union Canal in Whilton is an early 19th-century house constructed of red brick with slate roofs and brick ridge stacks. It is two stories high and features a five-window range. A six-panel door is located to the right of the center, complete with an overlight and a gauged brick lintel. There is a back door on the far left with a plank door and a gabled hood supported by brackets, along with a shallow segmental bow window to the right of this back door. On either side of the front door are 16-pane sash windows, which also have gauged brick lintels, and there are three similar windows on the first floor, with brick nogged eaves above.
To the left, there is a later addition that includes a round-headed arch at the basement level on the right, with steps leading down from the front towpath to a passage below the house, which provides access to a lane at a lower level at the rear. A stable door with a segmental head is located to the left, and there is a 19th-century casement window on the far left, along with a brick eaves cornice on the first floor. The building is said to have previously served as a shop and blacksmith's. The interior has not been inspected.
