Description

The gatehouse at Muscott House is a late medieval structure that has been significantly altered in the 19th century. It is built from coursed squared ironstone with red brick and features a tile roof and a stone end stack on the right. The gatehouse is two stories high and has a single window range. The gateway is flanked by flat buttresses and has a timber lintel. The upper storey is constructed with brick on both the front and back walls, likely replacing earlier timber framing, and includes a 19th-century loft door at the front with a segmental head beneath a small gable. The end walls are made of stone, and the gables are stone-coped with kneelers. The carriageway features a door on the left with chamfered stone jambs and a two-centred arched head with a keyblock. This door provides access to a stone spiral staircase leading to the upper storey, which contains a stone fireplace with a chamfered and cambered head.
