Description
Rose Cottage and Western Cottage form a row of two cottages, dating to the late 17th century. They are built of coursed ironstone rubble with squared ironstone detailing, and have a thatched roof, with brick end and ridge stacks. The cottages have two storeys and a six-window front. The central section, Rose Cottage, features a plank door with a chamfered lintel above which is a three-light casement window, with a similar window to the left. Western Cottage, the left-hand cottage, features an old plank door flanked by three-light casement windows with timber lintels; the window to the right incorporates a re-used spine beam. A section of the front wall at the right end of the building was removed in the late 18th or early 19th century, and the remaining structure is supported by two tree trunks, creating a rustic porch arrangement. A brick wall sits within the porch area, and a two-light casement window is located above it, with a similar window to the left of the porch. The first floor has two-light windows and eyebrow dormers. The interior of Rose Cottage includes stop-chamfered spine beams, stone-flagged floors, and two open fireplaces with chamfered bressumers – one fireplace has a bread oven. Western Cottage is noted to have similar spine beams and an open fireplace with a bressumer and a bread oven. Rose Cottage also features a built-in VR post box.
