Description
Manor Farmhouse is a 17th-century farmhouse, dated 1677, constructed from ironstone ashlar with an old tile roof and brick internal stacks on stone bases. The building has an H-plan layout and consists of two storeys and an attic, featuring a three-window range. The central entrance is marked by a chamfered stone doorcase with a four-centred head and a plank door, set within a timber gabled porch. This is flanked by two-light ovolo stone mullion windows, and above the door, there is a similar three-light window. The projecting wings have matching three-light windows on both the ground and first floors, with two-light windows in the attics. The gables are stone-coped with kneelers, and a datestone on the right gable is framed by an ornamental ribbon, inscribed with the letters G.I and the year 1677.
There is a moulded string course and a dentilled wood cornice at the centre between the wings. The right side elevation facing the garden has three two-light ovolo mullion windows on the ground floor and four similar windows on the first floor, along with a first-floor string course. The left side elevation, which faces the yard, features a back door with a four-centred head and a plank door with a hipped leaded hood. To the left are three-light casement windows with timber lintels on both the ground and first floors, while to the right are timber oriel windows on both levels, each supported by two stone brackets. The house has a fine set of small-pane leaded metal casements with wrought iron catches and some crown glass.
At the rear, there is an attached 19th-century kitchen block. Inside, the farmhouse boasts ogee-stop-chamfered spine beams, some boxed, and stone flagged floors. One room features a large open fireplace, while another has a moulded stone fireplace with a straight head and 19th-century marble chimney pieces in the drawing and dining rooms. The dog-leg staircase, leading from the ground floor to the attic, has arcaded newels and fat turned balusters. Upstairs, there is a four-centred arched stone fireplace with cut spandrels in one room, and another room features a bolection moulded wood chimneypiece. The collar truss roof is also noteworthy. The 19th-century kitchen at the rear includes an open fireplace with a complete set of equipment, a bread oven, and coppers for brewing and laundry.
