Description
The White Cottage is a cottage that dates back to the 16th century or earlier, with features from the 17th and 18th centuries. It has a timber frame and is finished with painted brick and plaster. The roof is covered with plain tiles and has a central ridge stack. The cottage is one storey high with attics and features a central door leading to a lobby entrance. There are three gabled dormers. To the right of the door, there are two small 17th-century leaded casement windows with ovolo and diamond mullions, along with an 18th-century casement window between them. The rear elevation includes a small gabled stair turret opposite the door, which has a small 17th-century window on the first floor. Adjoining this is a single-storey 17th-century lean-to that features a seven-light mullioned casement window, and there is also an 18th-century lean-to at the west end. Inside, there is a large central inglenook fireplace, with the eastern side featuring an early to mid-17th-century cut brick fire surround with a four-centre arch. This area was formerly an open hall. The roof above has smoke-blackened rafters and a smoke hood.
