Description

The Gardens is a house with three adjoining walled gardens, including an octagonal greenhouse, located on the north side of Marford Road in Lemsford. The building dates from the mid to late 18th century and is likely designed by James Paine for Sir Mathew Lamb. It is constructed of red brick and features a slate roof with a central chimney stack. The house is two storeys tall with a three-sided eastern end, and it has recessed sash windows with gauged brick heads and a brick sill band on the first floor. The north side has flush panel double doors.

The garden walls, which are 3 to 4 metres high, are attached to the west side of the house and have shallow pyramid coping. There are two long rectangular gardens to the east and a roughly square-plan garden to the north, which has outbuildings attached to its canted northern walls. A segmental-headed double gate on the west side is flanked by large heraldic panel fragments depicting a lion and a dragon.

In the center of the northern garden is an octagonal greenhouse from the early 19th century. It features red brick piers and lower walls, with a cast iron roof structure and wooden glazing bars. The square vestibule on the south side has a moulded wood cornice with a dentil course, and each face of the greenhouse has three 6-pane windows, with the center window functioning as a side-hung ventilator.
