Description
The building is a barn with an attached wall located at the entrance to the Express Dairies yard. The barn dates from the late 18th century and was extended in the early 19th century. The wall, which is part of the earlier structure, dates from the late 17th to early 18th century and features 20th-century renewed coping and repairs.
The red brick wall is primarily constructed in English garden wall bond and shows traces of stone coping at the plinth and a stone course below the renewed top coping. A corner of the wall has been rebuilt using 20th-century brick. Below the barn, the wall has sloping courses of header brick, raised to create a level base for the barn. The barn itself is timber framed and covered with weatherboarding, topped by a plain tile roof.
The barn consists of five 18th-century bays, with the central bay featuring a gabled cart entry that projects towards the yard. There is an additional 19th-century bay at the northeast end, along with 19th-century lean-to extensions on the yard side, although the front walls of these extensions were altered in the 20th century. The original 18th-century structure retains main wall timbers, including posts, wallplates, mid-rails, and sill beams, some of which have been reused, but the studding has been altered. Diagonal braces support the tiebeams, and the roof has clasped purlins on raking struts, with occasional straight windbraces. A blocked doorway is visible in the earlier brick wall facing Branch Road. Currently, the front of the barn facing the yard is obscured by a 20th-century metal-framed shelter for milk floats, which is not of special interest.
The barn and wall are significant as part of the 18th- and 19th-century farmyard that developed around the great barn at Kingsbury, which was formerly monastic, as well as the adjacent Kingsbury Manor and Watermill.
