Description

Ansell's End Farmhouse is a farmhouse dating from the 15th or early 16th century. Originally a hall house, the hall was floored over in the 16th century when a two-storey cross wing was added to the west end. The building was cased in dark red brick around 1800 and features a single-pitched roof. It stands two storeys high and has three glazing bar casements, with two on the ground floor that have segmental heads. The central door consists of two flush panels, two fielded panels, and two glazed panels, all within a moulded wood frame that has cut brackets. The eaves cornice is moulded and dentilled.

On the front west end, there is a tall 17th-century chimney stack with two square shafts. Inside, there is a smoke bay from the 15th or 16th century on the right side, into which a brick stack has been inserted. The interior also features heavy 16th-century chamfered floor beams, and the roof retains two crown posts along with some smoke-blackened rafters. There is some partitioning from the 18th century. The rear elevation reveals the shape of the cross wing, and extending beyond this is a 16th-century service bay that has been cased in 18th-century red brick and timber frame. Additionally, there are fragmentary early 17th-century wall paintings on the ground floor of the cross wing.
