Description

The bakehouse and adjoining outbuilding at Pirton Grange is a historical structure dating from the early 17th century, with a later 18th-century brick bakehouse attached to the east. The main building features a timber frame set on a high brick sill, with red brick infill and a chequered pattern using darker headers. Both buildings have steep roofs covered with old red tiles. They are connected to the main house by a covered walkway supported by two long parallel beams that carry a pitched tiled roof.

To the north of the house, there are two outbuildings that back onto a moat and face south. The western outbuilding is a two-storey framed structure with two bays, which includes a staircase leading to a cheese store on the first floor. This building also has a semi-basement accessed by three steps down in the western bay, which contains shelving and dairy equipment. It features jowled posts, a clasped-purlin roof, straight wind-braces, and straight tension braces at the corners, with a central truss that has a collar and struts.

The adjoining bakehouse to the east is much lower and narrower, constructed of brick, and includes a large faggot oven located centrally at the rear of the fireplace on the eastern end. The ceiling beneath the collars is also notable.
